Aluminium 7449 (UNS A97449) is a high-strength, heat-treatable alloy from the 7xxx series, alloyed mainly with zinc, magnesium, and copper. It brings a strong mix of high tensile strength, good fracture toughness, solid fatigue resistance, and a favorable strength-to-weight ratio, which is why it earns a place in demanding aerospace and structural work. As a later development in the 7xxx family, 7449 improves on grades like 7075 and 7050 in specific high-stress settings. The nominal chemistry runs about 7.7-8.7% zinc, 1.6-2.2% magnesium, and 1.6-2.0% copper, with a small zirconium addition for grain refinement and tight control of other elements. That composition lets the alloy harden through solution heat treatment and artificial aging. It is commonly supplied in tempers such as T7951, per AMS 4299 (closely tied to the AMS 4292 references for sheet and plate). That temper combines solution heat treatment, stress relief, and overaging to balance strength against better stress-corrosion-cracking resistance and toughness.

On mechanical properties, 7449-T7951 plate typically shows yield strength around 567-632 MPa and tensile strength above 590 MPa, with good elongation. Density sits near 2.83 g/cm³, which delivers real weight savings in aircraft structures without giving up integrity. The alloy machines well and responds favorably to vibration and fatigue, which matters for parts under cyclic load. Weldability is average, and corrosion resistance is solid, often improved further with protective coatings or anodizing for aerospace service.
