The development of 7050 addressed a practical structural design problem. Aircraft fuselage frames, wing spars, and bulkhead plate in wide-body commercial aircraft require plate thicknesses that were at the time beyond 7075's capability to deliver consistent strength and toughness properties throughout the cross-section. 7050's composition was optimized to provide reliable properties through thick sections, making it the standard specification for thick aerospace structural plate where 7075 is inadequate.

Through-thickness property consistency is 7050's defining technical advantage over 7075 in thick plate. In 7075 plate above approximately 75mm thickness, the center of the plate shows lower strength and toughness than the surface because the chromium-based grain structure control is less effective at the center of thick sections during quenching. 7050's zirconium addition provides more effective recrystallization control throughout the thickness of even very thick plate sections, delivering more uniform grain structure and more consistent mechanical properties from surface to center. For aircraft structural plate where the design stress calculation must be based on the minimum properties anywhere in the plate cross-section, that consistency allows a higher design stress to be used, reducing plate thickness and weight.

T7451 temper provides the over-aged condition required for acceptable stress corrosion cracking resistance in structural service. Like other high-strength 7xxx alloys, 7050 in peak-aged T6 temper is susceptible to SCC in the short transverse direction under sustained tensile stress. The T7451 over-aging treatment reduces SCC susceptibility to acceptable levels for structural service while retaining the majority of the peak strength. The T7451 designation also specifies stress relief by stretching, which reduces residual stress in the plate and improves dimensional stability during machining.

Machinability is good for a high-strength aluminium alloy in the T7451 condition. Aerospace structural components machined from 7050 plate include fuselage frames, bulkheads, wing spars, and machined structural fittings where large volumes of material are removed to produce the final component geometry. The reduced residual stress of the T7451 temper improves dimensional stability during heavy machining operations, which is a practical production advantage for large precision machined structural components.
