2014 and 2024 occupy similar positions in the 2xxx series. Both are copper-aluminium alloys with comparable strength levels in their respective standard tempers. The practical difference is that 2014 responds well to artificial aging (T6 temper), producing higher strength than naturally aged 2024-T3, while 2024 is typically specified in T3 temper where forming after solution treatment is required. For applications where maximum aged strength in sheet or plate form is the requirement and forming to complex shapes is not part of the manufacturing process, 2014-T6 is the appropriate specification.

Alclad construction is important for aerospace structural sheet applications. Bare 2014 sheet in outdoor or aerospace service environments is susceptible to surface pitting and corrosion, particularly where the copper-rich grain boundary phases create galvanic sites for preferential attack. Alclad 2014 bonds a thin layer of commercially pure aluminium or higher-purity aluminium alloy to both faces of the 2014 core, providing galvanic protection of the core through the sacrificial corrosion of the purer surface layer. For aerospace structural panels, Alclad 2014 is the standard form for exposed applications, with bare sheet used where the part is subsequently painted, anodized, or installed in a protected environment.

T6 temper provides the highest strength available from 2014, achieved by solution heat treatment followed by artificial aging at elevated temperature. The mechanical properties are more stable over time than T3 natural aging tempers, which can continue to change as natural aging progresses. For design and quality control, the predictable and stable T6 properties simplify structural calculation and production planning.

Machinability in the T6 condition is good for a high-strength aluminium alloy. Precision milled structural components, drilled and countersunk fastener patterns in aerospace panels, and machined structural fittings produced from 2014 plate hold tight tolerances and produce acceptable surface finish with standard carbide tooling.
