These are two-phase alloys that bring together the toughness and corrosion resistance of austenitic steels with the strength and stress-corrosion resistance of ferritic steels. That mix suits hard industrial work where a single-phase grade would fall short.

Duplex grades such as 2205 hold around 22 percent chromium with moderate nickel and molybdenum and added nitrogen. The result is a balanced microstructure of roughly equal ferrite and austenite. That structure gives close to twice the yield strength of standard austenitic grades while keeping good ductility, and it resists chloride stress-corrosion cracking and pitting better than 304 or 316. Super duplex grades such as 2507 push the alloying higher, with chromium near 25 percent and more molybdenum, nitrogen, and nickel. The higher chemistry lifts the Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN), so super duplex resists localized corrosion in aggressive chloride, seawater, and chemical environments, and it adds strength and toughness at low temperature.

Both families show up across oil and gas, offshore and subsea structures, desalination plants, chemical process equipment, and pulp and paper work. The strength-to-corrosion balance lets designers cut wall thickness, weight, and long-term maintenance. Super duplex is the pick when conditions turn most severe, or when design life and safety margins call for the higher performance even at the greater material cost.

Fabrication and welding need care. The right filler metals, controlled heat input, and sometimes post-weld heat treatment keep brittle intermetallic phases and chromium carbide precipitation from forming, since either one would hurt corrosion performance. Super duplex is generally harder to machine and weld than standard duplex because of its higher alloy content and hardness. Duplex offers a strong cost-to-performance balance for many chloride-bearing and structural jobs, while super duplex gives a higher-PREN answer for extreme marine, subsea, and chemical service where maximum pitting, crevice, and stress-corrosion resistance and high strength are all required.
