AMS 4003 covers Aluminium 1100 in sheet form to aerospace and precision specification requirements. Aluminium 1100 is a commercially pure aluminium grade with 99.0% minimum aluminium content and a controlled copper addition of 0.05–0.20%. That small copper addition distinguishes 1100 from 1050: it provides slightly higher strength than 1050 in the work-hardened condition while still retaining the corrosion resistance, formability, and conductivity that characterize the commercially pure aluminium series.

1100 is the most widely used commercially pure aluminium alloy globally. Its combination of processing versatility, availability in a broad range of tempers and thicknesses, and practical balance of properties makes it the default specification for the large category of applications that need aluminium's inherent characteristics without the structural demands that would justify moving to an alloy grade.

Formability is the standout practical characteristic of 1100. In the annealed condition, the alloy bends to very tight radii, draws into complex deep-drawn shapes, and forms by spinning, stamping, and roll forming without cracking or excessive springback. That formability covers a wide range of production processes and makes 1100 accessible to fabricators who work with standard sheet metal equipment. For parts that require complex geometry and where load-bearing strength is not the design driver, 1100 handles the fabrication process more forgivingly than any alloy grade.

Multiple temper availability gives engineers flexibility in balancing strength and formability for specific applications. Annealed (O temper) provides maximum formability for deep drawing and complex forming. H14 half-hard provides moderate strength and good formability for flat panels and general fabrication. H18 full-hard provides the highest work-hardened strength at some reduction in ductility, suitable for applications where the maximum strength available from this grade is required. Selecting the appropriate temper for the forming severity and the final strength requirement is the practical design decision for 1100 applications.

Surface quality and finish response make 1100 well suited to decorative and visible applications. The clean, high-purity surface anodizes to a clear, bright finish with good depth and uniformity. Chemical brightening and electropolishing produce reflective surfaces used in lighting reflectors and decorative hardware. For applications where appearance matters alongside corrosion resistance and formability, 1100 provides the surface quality that alloy grades with second-phase particles and grain boundary precipitates can't consistently match.
