PM Industries manufactures, supplies, and stocks AMS 4057 Aluminium 5083 Sheet Plate (UNS A95083) in a range of thicknesses, tempers, and sizes. AMS 4057 covers Aluminium 5083 in sheet and plate form to aerospace and precision specification requirements. Aluminium 5083 is a magnesium-bearing 5xxx series alloy with approximately 4.0–4.9% magnesium, non-heat-treatable, and the highest-strength non-heat-treatable aluminium alloy in widespread commercial production. Its combination of strength, marine corrosion resistance, and excellent weldability has made it the dominant structural aluminium in marine construction globally, and its cryogenic toughness retention has established it as the standard aluminium for LNG storage vessel construction.

The high magnesium content that gives 5083 its strength advantage over 5052 and 5086 also creates one important service limitation: sensitization. When 5083 is held at temperatures between approximately 65°C and 175°C for extended periods, magnesium can precipitate at grain boundaries as a beta phase (Mg2Al3) that is susceptible to intergranular corrosion. H116 and H321 tempers are specifically controlled to minimize this sensitization risk for marine structural service, and these tempers are the standard specification for most marine applications.

Marine structural dominance is the result of 5083 hitting the right combination of properties for that application better than any competing material at equivalent weight. Steel is stronger but heavier and requires corrosion protection in seawater. 5052 and 5086 have adequate marine corrosion resistance but lower strength. Composite materials have good strength-to-weight but are more expensive and harder to repair at sea. 5083 in H116 or H321 temper welds to itself easily, resists seawater corrosion reliably, provides good structural strength, and can be repaired with standard welding equipment in service. For ship hulls, high-speed ferry structures, naval vessel components, and offshore platform structural plate, that combination has no practical competitor in the aluminium category.

H116 versus H321 temper selection for marine applications is driven by the plate thickness and the fabrication process. H116 is produced by controlled cold work applied to the plate after annealing, and it's the standard marine temper for most thicknesses. H321 is produced by controlled strain hardening and stabilization, providing equivalent corrosion resistance and mechanical properties with properties that are slightly more uniform through thicker cross-sections. Both tempers are approved by major classification societies for marine structural use.

Cryogenic service is a distinct and important application area for 5083. Most metals become brittle at cryogenic temperatures, losing the toughness required for pressure-containing service. The austenitic 5083 microstructure maintains ductility and toughness at liquid nitrogen (-196°C) and liquid natural gas (-162°C) temperatures. 5083 plate is the standard material for LNG storage vessel inner tanks, cryogenic shipping container structure, and liquid natural gas carrier ship tank support structures, all applications where the material must perform reliably at temperatures that would embrittle ferritic steels.

Sheet and plate are available in H116, H321, H32, and O tempers across a range of thicknesses and sizes with full material certification to AMS 4057 and applicable specifications including ASTM B209. Contact PM Industries for thickness, temper, width, length, and pricing.
