PM Industries is a manufacturer, supplier, and stockist of AMS 4149 aluminum 7175 sheet and plate, a premium high-strength alloy made for demanding aerospace structures. 7175 sits in the 7xxx series and draws its strength from zinc, with magnesium and copper additions that respond well to controlled heat treatment. The nominal composition is 5.6% zinc, 2.5% magnesium, 1.6% copper, and 0.23% chromium, close to 7075 but held to tighter purity limits that improve toughness and fracture behavior. Under AMS 4149, the alloy is supplied in the T74 temper, an overaged condition that balances near-peak strength with strong resistance to stress-corrosion cracking. The result is a material that reaches the upper end of aluminum's strength range while staying far lighter than steel, which is what makes it a fit for critical aircraft components and other high-stress parts.

The specification covers a broad thickness range, so 7175 suits thin skins, mid-thickness structural members, and thicker sections that carry high static and fatigue loads. In the T74 condition, the alloy holds consistent mechanical properties with low residual stress. That stability is a big part of why fabricators reach for it on parts that need tight tolerances and predictable behavior under load. Typical room-temperature reference values run near 524 MPa (76 ksi) tensile strength, 455 MPa (66 ksi) yield strength, and around 9% elongation, with a density of about 2.80 g/cm3. Actual values depend on thickness, product form, and temper, so confirm them against the mill certification before design sign-off.

7175 accepts controlled solution and precipitation heat treatment that produces uniform properties and reduced residual stress, which makes it well suited to precision machining, bending, and forming when the right procedures are used. Machining goes well with carbide tooling, steady cutting speeds, and good cooling. Waterjet and laser cutting handle precision profiles cleanly. Joining and fastening call for qualified procedures, since heat input and poor process control can weaken local areas and undo the benefit of the temper. Tooling, coolant, and welding or fastening methods all need to be matched to the alloy to keep its properties intact.

Strength is the strong suit here, not corrosion resistance. 7175 is less corrosion-resistant than many 5xxx and 6xxx alloys, so parts are usually protected with clad layers, corrosion-preventive coatings, or specified surface preparation such as anodizing to extend service life in aggressive environments. The T74 temper already improves stress-corrosion-cracking resistance compared with peak-strength tempers, which helps on parts that sit under sustained tensile stress.

Typical applications for AMS 4149 7175 sheet and plate include highly stressed airframe structures, wing and fuselage fittings, landing gear components where specified, helicopter frames, and other aerospace and defense hardware. In each of these the draw is the same combination of weight savings, high strength, and fatigue resistance.

When specifying AMS 4149 7175 material, call out the required temper, the thickness and tolerances, the surface condition (clad or unclad), and the certification tests you need, including chemical analysis, mechanical testing, and heat-treatment records. Clear callouts on these points keep the delivered material aligned with both design intent and procurement requirements.

PM Industries manufactures, supplies, and stocks AMS 4149 aluminum 7175 in sheet, plate, and related forms across a range of tempers, thicknesses, and finishes. Contact our team for sizes, certification, and lead times on your next order.
