PM Industries manufactures, supplies, and stocks AMS 4027 Aluminium 6061 Sheet Plate. Alloy 6061 is a magnesium-silicon aluminium alloy, heat-treatable and available in multiple temper conditions. AMS 4027 specifically covers the O (annealed) temper in sheet and plate form, providing the fully soft condition from which subsequent forming and heat treatment to T4, T6, or other tempers is carried out. For parts that will be formed before final heat treatment, the O temper provides the maximum ductility and formability the alloy can offer.

6061 is consistently one of the most widely specified aluminium alloys across industries, and that's not by default. The combination of good strength in the T6 temper, solid corrosion resistance, reliable weldability, and straightforward machinability covers a very broad range of structural and precision fabrication requirements. It's a general-purpose high-performance aluminium in the practical sense of that term.

Corrosion resistance is meaningfully better than the 2xxx and 7xxx series high-strength aluminium alloys. In outdoor, marine atmospheric, and general industrial environments, 6061 performs without requiring protective coating in many service conditions. Where additional protection is needed, it anodizes well, producing a hard, adherent oxide layer that significantly extends surface life in aggressive environments.

Weldability is good, which is one of the characteristics that distinguishes 6061 from 7075 in applications where fabrication by welding is part of the manufacturing process. The heat-affected zone loses some strength after welding, as it does in most heat-treatable alloys. Where that strength reduction is a design concern, post-weld heat treatment can restore properties. For most structural fabrications where the full T6 strength isn't required at every weld location, the as-welded condition is accepted.

Machinability in the T6 condition is consistent and efficient. The alloy machines with good surface finish, holds dimensional tolerances well, and causes less tool wear than many competing materials at similar strength levels. That makes it practical for both high-volume precision machining and custom one-off component production.

The O temper specified by AMS 4027 is the starting condition for forming operations that require significant metal movement before heat treatment. Deep drawn housings, complex formed enclosures, and structural panels formed to tight radii are best processed in the annealed condition to avoid cracking, then heat treated after forming to develop final mechanical properties.
