The specification covers 7075 in the T6 temper for sheet and the T651 temper for plate, both solution and precipitation heat treated. This is one of the strongest aluminum alloys in common use, which is why it shows up in aircraft structures and other parts that carry heavy loads without adding weight. 7075 gets its strength from zinc, its main alloying element, with additions of magnesium, copper, and a small amount of chromium. The nominal composition under AMS 4045 is 5.6% zinc, 2.5% magnesium, 1.6% copper, and 0.23% chromium. Together these raise strength and hardness and, in the right temper, improve resistance to stress-corrosion cracking. The result is a heat-treatable alloy that lets designers replace heavier steel parts while keeping a strong ratio of strength to weight.

AMS 4045 covers a wide thickness band, from very thin sheet at 0.20 mm up to heavy plate near 101.6 mm. That range suits thin skins, mid-thickness structural members, and thicker components that still need to hold their strength under service loads. Sheet is supplied in the T6 temper. Plate is supplied in the T651 temper, which adds a controlled stretch during processing to relieve residual stress. In the T6 and T651 conditions called out by the specification, 7075 delivers yield and tensile strengths high enough to compete with parts that would otherwise be made from steel, at a fraction of the weight. Property values stay consistent across the common thickness bands, which makes the alloy predictable to design around. Typical room-temperature figures for 7075-T6 and T651 run around 572 MPa (83 ksi) tensile strength, 503 MPa (73 ksi) yield strength, and about 11% elongation, with a hardness near 150 HB and density of 2.81 g/cm3. Actual values vary with thickness and product form.

The temper does a lot of the work here. T6 sheet is solution heat treated and then artificially aged to peak strength. T651 plate goes through the same treatment with one extra step: a controlled stretch that relieves residual stress before aging, which improves dimensional stability on tight-tolerance parts that are machined after heat treatment. Where stress-corrosion cracking is the main worry, the overaged T73 and T7351 tempers trade a little strength for better resistance, making them the better choice for parts that sit under sustained tensile stress in a corrosive setting.

Corrosion control is part of how 7075 gets specified, since it is not as corrosion-resistant as the 5xxx or 6xxx series alloys. AMS 4045 material is often supplied Alclad, with a thin layer of corrosion-resistant aluminum bonded to the surface, or with other protective finishes. For exposed, highly stressed parts, the T73 and T7351 tempers give better resistance to stress-corrosion cracking than T6 or T651. Sound finishing, sealing, and assembly practice still matters in service.

Fabricators reach for 7075 because it works well at the bench for such a strong aluminum. It cold-forms reasonably well, though it is stiffer and springs back more than softer grades, so demanding geometry is sometimes formed in the annealed (O) temper and heat treated to T6 afterward. It also machines well, which is one reason it is popular for precision parts. Feeds and speeds should be set to take advantage of that while keeping the cut cool, since excess heat can affect surface finish and tolerances. T651 plate, with its relieved residual stress, holds dimensions better through heavy material removal. Parts reach their final condition by being solution treated, quenched, and aged, with the T651 stretch done before aging to lock in low residual stress, and heat-treatment records are commonly required on aerospace orders.

Typical uses include highly stressed aircraft components, wing and fuselage structures, helicopter parts, ordnance and defense hardware, and high-performance sporting goods, along with tooling and mold plate that needs strength at low weight. In each case the draw is the same combination of high static strength, fatigue resistance, and manageable density.

When specifying AMS 4045 7075 sheet or plate, call out the temper (T6, T651, or an overaged temper such as T73 or T7351), the thickness and tolerance, the surface condition (Alclad or bare mill finish), the width and length, and any testing or certification needs such as chemical analysis, mechanical test results, and heat-treatment records. Clear callouts on these points keep the material aligned with both design intent and procurement requirements.
