Alloy 2219 is a copper-bearing aluminium alloy, with copper as the primary alloying element at approximately 5.8–6.8%. The copper provides high strength through precipitation hardening, and the specific AMS 4031 specification covers the sheet and plate form in the O (annealed) temper, establishing the baseline from which heat-treated tempers like T6, T81, and T87 are developed. Each temper produces a different balance of strength and formability to suit specific fabrication and service requirements.

2219 occupies a specific position in the aluminium alloy family. It's not the most corrosion-resistant aluminium grade, and it's not the highest-strength. What it offers

few other alloys match is the combination of high strength retention at both elevated temperatures and cryogenic temperatures, combined with good weldability, in a single alloy.

combination is what puts it in aerospace fuel tanks, rocket oxidizer tanks, and cryogenic storage vessels where wide temperature range performance is a hard design requirement.

Elevated temperature strength is the characteristic

most clearly distinguishes 2219 from competing high-strength aluminium alloys in aerospace applications. Where alloys like 7075 lose strength significantly above approximately 120°C, 2219 maintains useful strength at temperatures well above

threshold. For components in aerospace structures and propulsion systems

experience elevated temperatures during operation,

retention is a practical design advantage

narrows the field considerably.

Cryogenic performance is equally distinctive. The toughness of 2219 increases at very low temperatures rather than decreasing, which is the behavior required for cryogenic propellant tanks in launch vehicles. Aluminium alloys

embrittle at low temperatures are eliminated from consideration for those applications. 2219 has an established history in

service going back to the Saturn V program, and it continues to be specified for cryogenic tank structures in modern launch vehicles.

Weldability is good with appropriate filler metal. Using 2319 filler wire, welded joints in 2219 maintain strength through post-weld heat treatment, which matters for fabricated pressure vessels and tank structures where weld zone strength is a structural design factor.

combination of base metal strength and weld zone strength retention after heat treatment is what makes 2219 practical for large welded aerospace structures.
