2017 is one of the older high-strength aluminium alloys and predates 2024 in the development of the 2xxx series. In many high-strength structural applications it has been succeeded by 2024, which provides higher strength and better fatigue resistance. However, 2017 retains a specific advantage over 2024 in machinability. The copper content and microstructure of 2017 produce chips that break more cleanly during high-speed machining, and the alloy holds tighter dimensional tolerances in precision turning and milling operations than 2024 in many production situations. For applications where machinability is the primary processing requirement and where 2024's incremental strength advantage isn't needed, 2017 remains the preferred specification.

Machinability in precision production is the current primary application driver for 2017. The alloy machines at high speeds with good surface finish and produces broken chips that clear easily from cutting zones, which keeps cutting forces and tool temperature lower than with alloys that produce long, stringy chips. In screw machine production, CNC turning, and high-volume precision part manufacturing, those machining characteristics translate to higher output rates, longer tool life, and better dimensional consistency between parts across a production run.
Rivet applications in aerospace were 2017's primary historical use, and it continues to be specified for rivets in certain aircraft applications where natural aging to T4 provides the required combination of strength and driven-head formation characteristics. Rivets in 2017 are driven in the soft condition shortly after quenching and naturally age to full strength in service, a process that has been standard in aerospace assembly for decades.
Corrosion resistance is the alloy's primary limitation. Like other 2xxx series alloys, 2017 is less corrosion-resistant than the 5xxx and 6xxx series due to copper-rich second phases at grain boundaries that create galvanic corrosion sites. For outdoor service, painting, anodizing, or cladding with a purer aluminium layer is standard practice. In controlled indoor and dry environments, 2017 performs without protective treatment for typical production and engineering applications.
