The T3 temper is the standard delivery condition for 2024 sheet. It's produced by solution heat treatment followed by cold work and natural aging, which develops higher strength than T4 while maintaining the formability needed for aircraft structural sheet metal forming operations. The combination of cold work and natural aging in T3 also provides better fatigue performance than artificially aged tempers, which is why 2024-T3 sheet has dominated fatigue-critical aircraft structural applications for over 70 years.

Fatigue resistance is the structural performance parameter that has kept 2024-T3 sheet in aircraft fuselage skin and other cyclic-stress structural applications for decades, despite the availability of higher-strength 7xxx alloys. In tension-dominated fatigue loading, 2024-T3 consistently outperforms 7xxx alloys of equivalent tensile strength because the copper-rich strengthening precipitates in the 2xxx alloy crack tip interaction are more effective at reducing fatigue crack growth rates. For fuselage pressurization cycles, wing flexure loads, and other high-cycle fatigue-critical structural locations, that lower fatigue crack growth rate translates directly into longer safe inspection intervals and better damage-tolerant structural performance.

Alclad construction is the standard form for exposed aircraft structural skin applications. Bare 2024 is susceptible to pitting and intergranular corrosion in aerospace atmospheric exposure. Alclad 2024 bonds a thin layer of commercially pure aluminium to both faces of the 2024 core, which is more anodic than the 2024 and sacrificially protects the core metal through galvanic action. That protection maintains the structural integrity of the skin panel over decades of service. For structural panels that will be painted or otherwise protected, bare 2024 is acceptable, but Alclad is standard for most aircraft structural skin applications where the alloy may be intermittently exposed.

Machinability in T351 condition is good for structural plate applications. Large structural components, fuselage frames, and thick structural fittings machined from 2024 plate hold tight tolerances and produce acceptable surface finish with carbide tooling. The T351 stress-relief designation is important for thick plate machining, as it reduces residual stress that would otherwise cause distortion when material is removed during machining.

Sheet and plate are available in T3, T351, and other specified tempers, bare and Alclad, across a range of thicknesses and sizes with full material certification to AMS 4035, AMS 4041, and applicable specifications including ASTM B209.
