MP35N is a nickel-cobalt-chromium-molybdenum multiphase alloy that achieves very high tensile strength through a combination of cold work and aging, while retaining excellent corrosion resistance across a wide range of aggressive environments. It's one of a small number of commercially available alloys that simultaneously achieves tensile strengths above 1900 MPa and reliable resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking, making it irreplaceable in applications where both properties are hard requirements.

The strength mechanism is cold work followed by aging rather than precipitation hardening from alloying additions alone. Solution-annealed MP35N is relatively ductile and machinable, allowing bar stock to be machined close to final dimensions before the final cold reduction and aging that develop full mechanical properties. For fastener production, the bar is typically cold-drawn or cold-headed to the required geometry in the annealed condition, then aged to develop strength. That sequence avoids trying to machine fully hardened material and the tool wear and dimensional challenges that would result.

Sour gas service qualification is a critical selection driver for MP35N in oil and gas. Subsea fasteners, wellhead studs, and downhole completion hardware in hydrogen sulfide environments must simultaneously carry high mechanical load and resist the combined corrosive and embrittlement attack of H2S, CO2, and chlorides at elevated pressures and temperatures. The strength levels required for structural adequacy in those connections would cause stress corrosion cracking or hydrogen embrittlement in most alternative alloys. MP35N in the appropriate cold-worked and aged condition resists both failure modes while providing the required strength, which is why it's the standard specification for sour service subsea bolting in many major oil company and offshore contractor specifications.

Medical implant applications are a second major use category. ASTM F562 covers MP35N specifically for surgical implant applications, where the combination of high strength, fatigue resistance, corrosion resistance in body fluids, and non-magnetic behavior all need to be met simultaneously. Orthopedic fixation devices, bone screws, and surgical cables made from MP35N take advantage of all those properties in an environment where material failure has direct safety consequences.

Non-magnetic behavior in all conditions is a meaningful advantage in certain applications. Where stainless steels and many other high-strength alloys develop magnetic response after cold working, MP35N remains non-magnetic regardless of cold work level. That matters in MRI-compatible medical hardware, certain electronic and instrumentation applications, and defense systems where magnetic signature control is a requirement.
