In the family of high-temperature nickel alloys, Microfer 4722 occupies a position comparable to Inconel 601 and 602CA: aluminum-containing nickel-chromium alloys where the alumina scale mechanism extends practical oxidation resistance to temperatures above what chromia-formers can sustain reliably. The specific temperature capability and mechanical properties of Microfer 4722 are consistent with other alloys in that performance class, covering continuous service applications in the upper range of the industrial furnace and combustion equipment temperature spectrum.

Oxidation resistance through alumina scale formation is the primary performance characteristic. At temperatures above approximately 1100°C where standard chromia-forming alloys begin losing scale integrity at an accelerating rate, alumina-forming alloys like Microfer 4722 maintain a more stable and adherent protective layer. For industrial furnace equipment, combustion hardware, and gas turbine components operating continuously in the upper temperature range, that stability translates directly into longer component life before surface degradation reaches a critical level.

Carburization resistance in carbon-rich atmospheres is relevant for heat treatment furnace fixtures, carburizing furnace hardware, and petrochemical process equipment exposed to high carbon activity at elevated temperatures. The alumina-forming composition resists carbon absorption better than lower-chromium or non-aluminum-bearing alloys, supporting longer fixture and component life in those service conditions.

Sheet and plate form gives fabricators the flexibility to produce combustor liners, furnace panels, radiant tube components, exhaust system heat shields, and formed structural parts that require both high-temperature performance and the manufacturing flexibility that flat product form provides. Alumina-forming nickel alloys are inherently more challenging to weld than simpler austenitic grades, and proper welding procedure selection is important to maintain performance through the weld zone.
