PM Industries manufactures, supplies, and stocks UNS S17700 17-7PH Spring Wire in a range of diameters and temper conditions. 17-7PH is a chromium-nickel-aluminum precipitation-hardening stainless steel, and in wire form it's produced primarily for spring applications where standard austenitic stainless steel wire doesn't provide sufficient strength or fatigue life. The alloy achieves high tensile strength after precipitation hardening, while still providing the corrosion resistance characteristic of austenitic stainless steels.

The manufacturing sequence for spring wire follows the same principle as 17-7PH sheet: the wire is processed in the softer, more ductile condition and then aged after coiling or forming to develop final mechanical properties. That allows spring coiling, forming, and other wire fabrication operations to be done in the more workable annealed or lightly cold-drawn condition, with the aging heat treatment applied to the finished spring to develop the strength the application requires.
Fatigue life is the property that most consistently distinguishes 17-7PH from standard 302/304 stainless spring wire in demanding spring applications. Standard austenitic stainless wire provides good corrosion resistance but limited fatigue life at high stress amplitudes. When a spring must operate at high load with a short spring index and deliver long fatigue life, the higher strength and better fatigue endurance of 17-7PH in the hardened condition is the practical selection driver. The difference in fatigue cycles to failure between the two materials at high stress levels is substantial enough to be a decisive factor in spring life calculations for critical applications.
Spring rate consistency after aging is important for precision spring applications. Springs used in instruments, control systems, and precision mechanisms must maintain a predictable and consistent spring rate across the production batch and throughout service life. 17-7PH's well-controlled precipitation hardening response, combined with its high elastic modulus retention after aging, supports that consistency better than cold-drawn standard stainless wire, where slight variations in cold work level between coil positions can produce spring rate variation.
Corrosion resistance covers most industrial, commercial, and moderate marine atmospheric exposure without special surface treatment. For more aggressive environments involving chlorides, strong acids, or reducing chemicals, higher-alloy nickel-based spring wire grades provide better protection, but for the broad range of spring applications in industrial and commercial settings, 17-7PH covers the requirement well.
