Hastelloy X is a solid-solution strengthened nickel alloy with decades of documented service in aerospace gas turbine combustors, industrial furnace hardware, and high-temperature chemical processing equipment. The balance of molybdenum for solid-solution strengthening, chromium for oxidation resistance, and a small cobalt addition for further strengthening produces a sheet alloy with better high-temperature performance than standard austenitic stainless steels and better fabricability than most gamma-prime strengthened superalloys.

Sheet and plate form is what makes Nickelvac HX / Hastelloy X particularly useful for fabricated aerospace hardware. Combustor liners, transition ducts, afterburner components, and flame holders are all fabricated from sheet material that is cut, formed, and welded into complex three-dimensional shapes. The sheet must have enough ductility and formability in the as-supplied annealed condition to tolerate those fabrication operations without cracking, and it must then hold its geometry and properties in service at temperatures that would cause standard stainless steels to soften and distort. Hastelloy X sheet covers both requirements.

Weldability is a genuine practical advantage in fabricated sheet metal assemblies. Many high-temperature nickel alloys with comparable strength and oxidation resistance are prone to cracking during welding or post-weld heat treatment, which makes complex welded sheet metal assemblies difficult and expensive to produce. Hastelloy X tolerates standard welding procedures well and can be welded without the specialized techniques that some competing alloys require. That practical advantage keeps it specified for fabricated combustor hardware and industrial furnace components where multiple welds in complex geometries are part of the manufacturing process.

Oxidation resistance up to approximately 1200°C in continuous service covers the operating temperature range of most industrial furnace equipment and the hot sections of gas turbine combustors. For intermittent service, the usable temperature is somewhat higher. In thermal cycling applications where components heat and cool repeatedly, the oxide scale that forms on Hastelloy X adheres reasonably well through cycling, limiting the progressive surface loss that occurs when scale spalls repeatedly.
