It was developed specifically for applications requiring the combination of high tensile strength, fatigue resistance, and chloride corrosion resistance that neither standard stainless steels nor conventional nickel alloys provide simultaneously.

MP159 belongs to the MP (multiphase) alloy family alongside MP35N. Both are cobalt-nickel based and achieve high strength through a combination of cold work and aging, but MP159 was developed to extend that capability to higher operating temperatures and more demanding corrosion conditions than MP35N can handle. At maximum cold work and aging, MP159 achieves tensile strengths exceeding 1900 MPa while retaining elongation values that allow the material to be used in structural and spring applications without excessive brittleness.

High strength combined with chloride corrosion resistance is the defining combination that makes MP159 irreplaceable in its specific applications. Most alloys that achieve very high tensile strength either sacrifice corrosion resistance (high-strength steels and martensitic stainless grades) or sacrifice strength (nickel alloys that are strong in corrosion resistance but limited in achievable tensile strength). MP159 achieves both in the same material, which is why it appears in applications where no alternative meets both requirements.

Offshore oil and gas fasteners are the most consistent application for the MP alloy family. Subsea bolting, wellhead studs, and high-pressure downhole fasteners need to carry high preload without relaxing at the service temperature, resist sour gas and chloride corrosion in the production environment, and survive installation torque without galling. The strength, fatigue resistance, and corrosion resistance combination of MP159 covers all three requirements, and it's qualified to NACE MR0175 in specific cold-worked and aged conditions for sour service.

Spring applications benefit from the same combination. Springs in aerospace actuators, fuel system components, and precision instruments that operate in chloride-containing or aggressive environments need spring wire or strip that maintains spring rate and fatigue life in those conditions. MP159 provides fatigue endurance and corrosion resistance at strength levels above what standard stainless spring alloys can achieve.

Sheet and plate form allows MP159 to be used in fabricated components beyond the wire and bar forms more commonly associated with the MP alloys. Formed brackets, diaphragms, and structural sheet metal components that need both strength and corrosion resistance in marine or chemical environments are practical applications for MP159 sheet.
