A286, listed as UNS S66286, is a precipitation-hardening iron-nickel-chromium superalloy supplied as rod for high-temperature, high-stress work. The chemistry pairs a high nickel base with chromium, molybdenum, and controlled titanium and aluminum additions. That mix gives the bar elevated-temperature strength, good oxidation and corrosion resistance, and useful ductility, so fasteners, studs, shafts, and forged parts hold their mechanical integrity up to roughly 700°C (1300°F).

A286 hardens through heat treatment, not cold work. Parts made from the bar can be solution-treated and aged to develop high yield and tensile strength while keeping reasonable toughness and fracture resistance under cyclic loads. That combination is the reason it shows up in parts that carry sustained stress at temperature.

Corrosion resistance covers oxidizing, mildly corrosive, and some marine environments. High creep and tensile strength at temperature round out the profile and explain its long history in aerospace and turbine hardware.

Machinability and fabrication match other high-strength stainless alloys. The material machines well with the right tooling and speeds, but it pays to manage chip control and cooling. It welds acceptably with qualified procedures, and a post-weld heat treatment is used to restore mechanical properties and reduce sensitivity at the joint.

A286 reaches its strength through a solution treatment followed by aging. Solution treatment puts the alloying elements into solid solution, and the aging cycle precipitates the strengthening phases that drive up yield and tensile strength. The selected condition should match the mechanical-property minimums the part needs.

Round bar is available in standard lengths and a broad diameter range, from small fastener stock up to large shafts. Material certification commonly includes chemical analysis, mechanical testing, and heat-treatment records to meet engineering procurement standards.

FAQs

What is A286 round bar?
A286 (UNS S66286) is a precipitation-hardening iron-nickel-chromium superalloy bar used for high-temperature, high-stress parts such as fasteners, shafts, and turbine hardware.

What temperature can A286 handle?
Parts keep their mechanical integrity up to about 700°C (1300°F), with good creep and tensile strength at temperature.

How does A286 develop its strength?
Through heat treatment. A solution treatment followed by an aging cycle builds high yield and tensile strength while keeping reasonable toughness.

Can A286 be welded?
Yes, with qualified procedures. A post-weld heat treatment is used to restore properties and reduce sensitivity at the welded joint.

What finishes and sizes are available?
Hot-finished and bright-drawn bar in a wide diameter range, from small fastener stock to large shafts, with bright or turned surface finishes.

What certification comes with the bar?
Chemical analysis, mechanical testing, and heat-treatment records, with added NDT or hardness testing on request.
