FV535 is a high-strength martensitic stainless steel developed for elevated temperature service in gas turbines, aerospace structures, and precision engineering applications where high strength, toughness, and thermal stability must all be present simultaneously. It's a chromium-molybdenum-vanadium alloy with a composition optimized for strength retention at elevated temperature rather than for aqueous corrosion resistance, which distinguishes it from the standard austenitic and duplex corrosion-resistant grades.

The alloy is heat-treatable, responding to quench and temper treatment to develop the combination of tensile strength and toughness required for its intended applications. The temper condition determines where the balance sits between maximum strength and maximum toughness, and the appropriate temper for a given application is defined by the design requirement and the applicable material specification.
Elevated temperature strength retention is what drives FV535 specification in gas turbine and aerospace applications. In rotating and structural components that experience both mechanical load and elevated service temperature simultaneously, the alloy must maintain adequate yield strength and creep resistance throughout the operating temperature range. FV535's chromium-molybdenum-vanadium composition provides solid-solution and precipitation strengthening that supports that requirement across the alloy's rated service temperature range.
Heat treatment response gives fabricators control over the final mechanical property balance. Higher tempering temperatures produce better toughness with some reduction in tensile strength. Lower tempering temperatures maintain maximum strength with somewhat reduced toughness. For each specific application, the tempering condition is selected to meet the strength floor required by the design while maintaining acceptable toughness for the loading conditions and failure mode risk.
Wear resistance under mechanical contact is relevant for components where surface loading or sliding contact is part of the service condition. The hardened martensitic structure provides better surface resistance to mechanical degradation than softer austenitic grades, which makes FV535 practical for components where both structural load-bearing and surface durability are requirements.
Sheet and plate form makes FV535 accessible for fabricated structural components, formed aerospace sheet metal parts, and precision-machined structural members that require flat product as the starting material. With appropriate tooling and procedures, FV535 sheet can be cut, formed, and welded for fabricated assemblies, with heat treatment performed on the assembly or finished component to develop final mechanical properties.
