A286 is an iron-nickel-chromium superalloy with additions of molybdenum, titanium, and vanadium, developed for service at elevated temperatures where standard austenitic stainless steels lose too much strength to be useful. The alloy is age-hardenable through titanium and aluminum precipitation, which allows it to reach tensile strengths significantly above the solution-annealed baseline after heat treatment. That combination of heat resistance and age-hardening capability is what keeps A286 consistently specified for high-temperature fasteners, springs, and structural wire applications.

A286 is classified as a superalloy, though it's iron-based rather than nickel-based. It sits between standard austenitic stainless steels in composition and cost, and nickel superalloys like 718 in performance. For applications that need more than 316L can provide at elevated temperatures but where the cost of gamma-prime strengthened nickel alloys isn't justified, A286 occupies a practical middle ground that has kept it in active aerospace and industrial specification for over 60 years.

Wire in the solution-annealed condition is the starting form for most fastener and spring production. A286 wire in the annealed condition is sufficiently ductile to be cold drawn, formed into spring coils, cold headed into bolt blanks, or otherwise worked into component geometry. After forming is complete, the components are aged at approximately 720°C for a specified time to develop the full precipitation-hardened mechanical properties. That sequence, form first then age, avoids the difficulties of forming the fully-hardened material.

Fastener applications are the most consistent industrial use for A286 wire. High-temperature bolts, studs, and nuts in jet engines, gas turbines, and industrial hot sections require fasteners that maintain clamping load at elevated temperature without creeping under the sustained tensile stress of bolt preload. Standard stainless steel fasteners relax at temperatures where A286 holds its preload reliably. That creep resistance under sustained load at temperature is what makes A286 the standard specification for high-temperature fasteners in aerospace and gas turbine applications.

Spring applications benefit from the same combination of fatigue resistance and strength at temperature. Springs in fuel system components, exhaust system mechanisms, and engine control linkages that operate at elevated temperatures need an alloy that maintains spring rate and fatigue life through the operating temperature range. A286 provides both, at a cost point well below nickel superalloy alternatives for spring applications that don't need the full temperature capability of alloys like 718.
