It's a chromium-nickel-aluminum precipitation-hardening stainless steel, and AMS 5528 covers the sheet and plate form in the Condition A (solution-annealed) temper. That annealed condition is the starting point for subsequent forming and heat treatment to the final strength condition required by the application. Most commonly that's Condition CH900 or CH950, achieved by cold rolling the annealed material and then aging, or Condition TH1050, achieved by a martensitic transformation treatment followed by aging.

17-7PH sits between standard austenitic stainless steels and the more exotic nickel superalloys in both cost and performance. It offers significantly higher strength than 301 or 304 in the hardened condition, with corrosion resistance better than most martensitic stainless grades but somewhat below 316L in aggressive chloride environments. For aerospace spring strip, formed structural components, and precision hardware where high strength and good corrosion resistance must coexist in sheet or thin plate form, 17-7PH covers the requirement in a way that neither standard austenitic nor martensitic grades can match.

Forming in Condition A is the manufacturing sequence that makes 17-7PH practical for complex sheet metal parts. In the solution-annealed condition, the alloy is semi-austenitic and substantially more ductile and formable than in any hardened condition. Complex brackets, formed housings, deep-drawn diaphragms, and precision-blanked spring components are all produced from Condition A sheet before heat treatment. After forming is complete, the parts go through the specified conditioning and aging sequence to develop full mechanical properties. That approach avoids trying to form high-strength material and the springback, cracking, and tooling wear that would result.

Distortion control during aging is better than for standard austenitic stainless steels that require high-temperature solution annealing after forming. The aging treatments for 17-7PH, which occur at temperatures between approximately 480°C and 565°C depending on the condition, produce much less distortion than the 1050°C or higher solution annealing that austenitic grades need after cold work. For precision parts where dimensional accuracy of the finished component matters, that lower treatment temperature reduces post-heat-treatment straightening and rework.

Fatigue performance in the hardened condition is good and well-documented for aerospace spring and structural applications. Spring components that flex repeatedly in service and structural brackets subject to cyclic vibration load both benefit from 17-7PH's combination of high yield strength and fatigue endurance limit.
