Tongue & Groove Flanges | ASME B16.5 | Matched Facing

PM Industries manufactures, supplies, and stocks Tongue and Groove Flanges in a range of materials, pressure classes, and pipe sizes. A tongue and groove flange pair consists of two mating flanges with complementary face profiles: one flange has a raised concentric ring (the tongue) machined into its face, and the mating flange has a matching recessed groove machined to accept the tongue. The gasket sits in the groove, retained on its inner and outer edges by the groove walls and the tongue. When the flanges are bolted together, the tongue enters the groove and compresses the gasket in a controlled, confined seating area.

That confined gasket seating is what distinguishes tongue and groove flanges from raised face and flat face configurations. On a raised face flange, the gasket sits on an open raised surface and can be displaced inward by bolt load or lateral movement during assembly. On a tongue and groove joint, the gasket can't move. It's positionally fixed in the groove before the bolts go in, and the tongue prevents outward displacement under compression. That physical constraint produces more consistent gasket seating and better sealing reliability, particularly in applications where gasket positioning during assembly is difficult or where vibration in service could cause gasket migration.

Gasket containment under compression is the practical sealing advantage. When a gasket is compressed between two raised faces, the gasket material flows both inward and outward under bolt load, and the outer portion that isn't under the bolt circle contact area may lift slightly. In a tongue and groove joint, the groove walls contain the gasket material and the tongue prevents outward flow, keeping the full compressed thickness of the gasket under controlled seating stress. The result is a more effective seal at equivalent bolt load compared to a raised face joint.

Thermal cycling service is one of the conditions where tongue and groove flanges consistently outperform simpler face configurations. As a system heats and cools in service, flange faces move relative to each other due to differential thermal expansion. On a raised face joint, that movement can allow the gasket to work slightly, reducing the contact stress and eventually leading to a slow leak. The tongue and groove profile maintains gasket position through thermal cycling better, because the gasket has nowhere to migrate within the groove.

Non-interchangeability is the design constraint that must be managed at procurement. A tongue flange can only mate with a groove flange. A raised face flange cannot mate with a tongue or groove flange without machining modification. In plant maintenance situations where replacement flanges need to be sourced quickly, confirming the face type of the mating flange before ordering replacement components is essential to avoid delays.

Tongue and groove flanges are available with full material certification to ASTM, ASME, and applicable specifications. Both tongue and groove components must be ordered as matched pairs from the same standard and dimensional specification. Contact PM Industries for material selection, face configuration, pressure class, pipe size, and pricing.
