Slip On Flanges | ASME B16.5 | EN 1092-1

PM Industries manufactures, supplies, and stocks Slip On Flanges in a range of materials, pressure classes, and pipe sizes. A slip on flange has a bore slightly larger than the pipe outside diameter, allowing the pipe to be inserted through the flange body before welding. Two fillet welds secure the assembly: one at the pipe end on the face side, and one at the back of the flange hub. That double fillet weld configuration distributes the load between two weld locations and provides the structural connection between the pipe and flange.

The comparison to a weld neck flange is the practical design reference. A weld neck flange has a tapered hub with a single butt weld at the pipe end, which provides a full-penetration weld that can be radiographically examined and which distributes pipe-to-flange stress more gradually. Slip on flanges use two fillet welds instead, which can't be radiographed in the same way and which produce a somewhat higher stress concentration at the pipe-to-flange joint under bending and fatigue loads. That's the engineering trade-off: slip on flanges are less expensive, easier to fit, and faster to install, but weld neck flanges are the correct specification for high-pressure, high-temperature, and cyclic-stress service.

Installation ease is the characteristic that drives slip on flange selection in most applications. Positioning a weld neck flange for tack welding requires the flange and pipe to be held in exact alignment before the root pass is made, which takes time and setup. With a slip on flange, the pipe slides into the bore to a predetermined setback distance and is then tack-welded in multiple positions before final welding. That process is faster, requires less fit-up precision, and is more forgiving of minor pipe end preparation variation.

Cost is lower than weld neck for equivalent size and pressure class because the forging is simpler. No tapered hub to produce, no bore matching to pipe schedule in the hub geometry. The simpler forging geometry reduces both material consumption and machining time, which carries through to a lower finished component price.

Water, cooling, and general utility service are the applications where slip on flanges are most consistently appropriate. These systems typically operate at low pressures, don't cycle thermally or mechanically in ways that produce significant fatigue loading, and don't require full-penetration weld inspection. In those conditions, the performance limitation of slip on flanges relative to weld neck flanges is not a practical concern, and the installation and cost advantages are real.
