Screwed Flanges | ASME B16.5 | BS 10

PM Industries manufactures, supplies, and stocks Screwed Flanges, also called threaded flanges, in a range of materials, pressure classes, and pipe sizes. A screwed flange connects to a threaded pipe end by screwing the flange onto the pipe's external threads, NPT or BSP depending on the specification. No welding is required to make the pipe-to-flange connection. The flange face then bolts to the mating flange in the same way as any other standard flange type.

The no-weld attachment is the defining characteristic and the primary reason screwed flanges get specified in particular situations. In locations where welding is not permitted, not practical, or not safe, a threaded connection provides a flanged pipe joint without introducing a heat source. That covers situations like explosive atmospheres, systems carrying flammable or hazardous fluids where hot work permits are difficult to obtain, existing installations where adjacent equipment or insulation makes welding impractical, and low-pressure utility systems where the time and cost of welding aren't justified.

Pressure limitations are an important design consideration. The threaded connection itself is the weak point in a screwed flange assembly, not the flange body. Pipe thread engagement provides a mechanical joint but not a full-penetration weld, so the connection is inherently less strong and less fatigue-resistant than a welded joint. ASME B16.5 rates threaded flanges to the same pressure classes as other flange types, but many engineering specifications limit screwed flanges to pressure class 150 or class 300 maximum, and some critical service specifications exclude them entirely in favor of welded connections. Engineers should verify that the specific project specification permits threaded flanges for the intended service before specifying them.

Thread type compatibility must be confirmed before ordering. NPT (National Pipe Taper) thread is the standard in North American practice. BSP (British Standard Pipe) Tapered thread, designated BSPT or Rc, is used in European, UK, and Asian practice. Parallel thread forms like BSPF or G are sometimes encountered on non-pressure-rated connections. Ordering the correct thread form for the project piping standard prevents incompatibility at installation.
