Insert Flanges | DIN 2642 | EN 1092-1

PM Industries manufactures, supplies, and stocks Insert Flanges in a range of materials, sizes, and pressure ratings. An insert flange is a two-piece flange assembly consisting of an inner insert, which is welded or fitted to the pipe, and an outer backing ring that slides over the pipe and backs the insert at the joint face. The two components work together at assembly to form the complete flange connection.

The design is used in specific piping applications where a conventional one-piece weld neck or slip-on flange presents practical difficulties. Jacketed piping is the most common example. In a jacketed pipe system, the inner process pipe runs inside an outer jacket pipe. Getting a conventional flange onto the inner pipe while the jacket is in place is either impossible or requires cutting and re-welding the jacket at every flange location. Insert flanges solve that problem by allowing the insert to be fitted to the inner pipe independently, with the backing ring sliding into position from outside the jacket.

Jacketed piping service is the primary engineering driver for insert flanges. Jacketed pipe carries heat-sensitive or viscosity-sensitive process fluids in the inner pipe, with a heating or cooling medium circulating in the annular space between inner and outer pipes. The inner pipe must connect to process equipment flanges at each end, while the jacket must also terminate and connect at each flange location. Insert flanges handle the inner pipe connection without requiring the jacket to be cut at every connection point, which simplifies both initial fabrication and subsequent maintenance.

Bolt hole alignment is a practical advantage during installation. The backing ring is free to rotate around the insert before the bolts are tightened, which allows bolt holes to be lined up with the mating flange without rotating the entire pipe spool. That flexibility speeds installation in field situations where pipe spools arrive pre-fabricated and rotating the assembly to align bolt holes isn't practical.

Material selection covers corrosive and high-temperature process requirements. Stainless steel insert flanges in 316L are common in chemical processing jacketed piping. Duplex stainless grades cover more aggressive corrosive service. Nickel alloy inserts in Inconel 625 or Hastelloy C-276 cover the most demanding chemical and high-temperature jacketed process applications.

Insert flanges are available with full material certification to applicable ASTM and ASME standards. Contact PM Industries for material selection, pipe size, pressure rating, and pricing.
