Nicrofer 5120 CoTi is the VDM Metals designation for Alloy C-263 (also known as Nimonic 263), a nickel-cobalt-chromium-molybdenum precipitation-hardenable superalloy developed for high-temperature service in gas turbines and aerospace structures. It's strengthened by gamma-prime precipitates from titanium and aluminum additions, achieving good elevated temperature strength while retaining significantly better ductility and formability than many other gamma-prime strengthened superalloys.

That combination of strength at temperature and practical formability is what makes C-263 well suited for sheet and plate applications in gas turbine hot sections. Most gamma-prime superalloys with comparable temperature capability are difficult to form in sheet stock without cracking. C-263 is considerably more workable, which is why it became the established specification for combustor and hot-section sheet metal fabrications where the manufacturing process involves forming, welding, and complex assembly operations.

Formability in the solution-annealed condition is the practical manufacturing advantage that distinguishes C-263 from many competing high-temperature sheet alloys. Complex combustor liners, transition ducts, and formed aerospace hot-section components require sheet stock that can be bent, rolled, flanged, and otherwise deformed without cracking during fabrication. After forming is complete, the solution-annealed sheet is aged to develop the precipitation-strengthened mechanical properties required for service. That forming-before-aging manufacturing sequence is practical with C-263 in a way it isn't with most other gamma-prime superalloys of comparable strength.

Weldability supports complex fabricated assemblies. C-263 can be TIG welded with appropriate filler and procedure, and the welded joints maintain adequate strength and oxidation resistance after post-weld aging heat treatment. In gas turbine combustor assemblies and hot-section fabrications that involve many welds in sheet metal structures, that weldability is essential. Alloys that are difficult or impractical to weld reliably at sheet metal thicknesses are eliminated from consideration for those components regardless of their temperature capability.

Oxidation resistance in combustion gas environments covers the service exposure for the primary gas turbine and aerospace applications. The chromium and cobalt content provides a stable protective oxide in air and combustion atmospheres that limits surface attack over the component service life. Thermal cycling resistance is adequate for the repeated heating and cooling that combustor and transition duct components experience with each engine start and shutdown cycle.
