PM Industries manufactures, supplies, and stocks 304L Stainless Steel Round Bar (UNS S30403). It's the low-carbon version of the standard 304 austenitic stainless steel, with carbon held to 0.03% maximum compared to 0.08% maximum in standard 304. That lower carbon content is what makes 304L the preferred specification for welded fabrications. During welding, standard 304 can sensitize in the heat-affected zone, where carbon combines with chromium to form carbides at grain boundaries, reducing corrosion resistance in those areas. With 304L's low carbon content, that carbide precipitation is minimized, maintaining corrosion resistance through the weld zone without requiring post-weld annealing.

In current practice, most 304L material also meets 304 mechanical property requirements and is dual-certified. That dual certification covers both grades with a single heat of material, which simplifies procurement and inventory management for fabricators who may need either grade depending on the application.

Weld zone corrosion resistance is the clearest practical advantage of 304L over standard 304. In fabricated vessels, piping systems, structural assemblies, and process equipment that will be welded and then exposed to corrosive service, the low carbon content ensures the heat-affected zone doesn't become a weak point in the corrosion barrier. That matters in food processing equipment, pharmaceutical vessels, water treatment systems, and chemical plant fabrications where consistent corrosion resistance through every weld is a basic requirement.

Corrosion resistance in atmospheric and mild chemical service is good and well proven over decades of widespread use. 304L handles moisture, humidity, many organic acids, food-grade chemicals, and mild industrial environments without significant attack. For more aggressive environments containing chlorides, concentrated acids, or elevated temperatures, 316L or higher-alloy grades provide better protection.

Cryogenic toughness is maintained through the full temperature range down to liquid nitrogen temperatures. The austenitic structure doesn't undergo a ductile-to-brittle transition the way ferritic and martensitic stainless steels do at low temperatures, making 304L a practical choice for cryogenic storage vessels, piping, and structural components.

Non-magnetic behavior in the annealed condition is useful in applications where magnetic interference is a concern, including medical devices, certain electronic assemblies, and scientific equipment. Cold working will induce some magnetic response, so the degree of cold work in the finished bar matters for applications where magnetic permeability is a hard requirement.
