PM Industries manufactures, supplies, and stocks 316Ti Stainless Steel Round Bar (UNS S31635). It's a titanium-stabilized version of 316 stainless steel, with the same molybdenum-bearing base composition but with titanium added at a minimum of five times the carbon content. That titanium addition preferentially combines with carbon, preventing the carbon from forming chromium carbides at grain boundaries during exposure to temperatures in the sensitization range of approximately 425°C to 815°C. The result is better resistance to intergranular corrosion in the heat-affected zone of welds and in components that see repeated thermal cycling through that temperature range.

The practical difference between 316L and 316Ti is often misunderstood. 316L addresses sensitization by reducing carbon content so there's less carbon available to form carbides. 316Ti addresses it by tying up the carbon with titanium before it can combine with chromium. Both approaches work. 316L is generally the first choice for most applications because it's widely stocked and dual-certifiable. 316Ti becomes the preferred specification when operating temperatures are too high for 316L to remain stable long-term, typically above approximately 400°C in continuous service, where carbon migration can still occur even in low-carbon grades over extended time periods.

Intergranular corrosion resistance after welding is the primary reason 316Ti gets specified over standard 316 or 316L in certain applications. In fabricated equipment that operates continuously in the sensitization temperature range, or in welded structures where post-weld heat treatment isn't practical, the titanium stabilization provides ongoing protection that neither 316 nor 316L can guarantee over long service periods at temperature.

Molybdenum content provides the same chloride pitting and crevice corrosion resistance as standard 316 and 316L grades. That protection covers marine environments, chloride-containing process streams, and industrial chemical service conditions where 304-series grades would show unacceptable pitting rates. The 316Ti specification adds the titanium stabilization benefit without reducing the molybdenum-based corrosion protection.

Elevated temperature service is where 316Ti justifies its selection over 316L most clearly. For exhaust systems, heat exchanger components, chemical plant equipment, and furnace hardware that operate continuously above 400°C, the titanium stabilization provides a level of long-term microstructural stability that low-carbon chemistry alone doesn't fully guarantee over extended service periods of thousands of hours.
