PM Industries manufactures, supplies, and stocks 253 MA Round Bar (UNS S30815). It's an austenitic stainless steel with a carefully balanced composition of chromium (20–22%), nickel (10–12%), silicon (1.4–2.0%), nitrogen (0.14–0.20%), and rare earth element additions, primarily cerium. That combination is what separates 253 MA from standard high-temperature stainless grades like 310. The rare earth additions significantly improve oxide scale adhesion during thermal cycling, while the nitrogen addition strengthens the austenite matrix at temperature. Silicon contributes further to oxidation resistance. Together those elements produce an alloy with better high-temperature performance per unit of nickel and chromium than 310 in many service conditions.

253 MA was developed specifically to fill the performance gap between standard austenitic grades like 310 and more expensive nickel alloys like Incoloy 800H. It offers better oxidation resistance and creep strength than 310 at temperatures above approximately 900°C, at a lower alloy cost than the nickel-iron-chromium grades. For applications in the 900°C to 1100°C range where 310 reaches its practical limits but 800H is over-specified, 253 MA hits a practical and cost-effective balance.

Oxide scale adhesion during thermal cycling is where 253 MA consistently outperforms 310 and most other chromia-forming austenitic grades. In applications that cycle between ambient and operating temperature repeatedly, oxide scale spalling during cooling is a primary mechanism of surface degradation. Each spalling event exposes fresh metal that re-oxidizes on the next heating cycle, progressively consuming material. The cerium addition in 253 MA significantly reduces that spalling, which extends component surface life in batch heat treatment equipment, cyclic furnace applications, and other thermally dynamic service conditions.

Creep strength above 900°C is better than 310. For structural components, radiant tube supports, and furnace fixtures that carry mechanical load at the upper end of the austenitic stainless temperature range, 253 MA provides more reliable dimensional stability than 310 over long service intervals. That strength advantage becomes the deciding factor in applications where 310 has shown creep deformation or sag over extended service periods.

Silicon content, while lower than in some other heat-resistant grades, contributes meaningfully to oxidation resistance. It also makes 253 MA somewhat more prone to sigma phase formation over very long service periods above approximately 700°C, which is a consideration for components with exceptionally long service intervals. In most practical applications, that concern is manageable and doesn't affect service life adversely.
