PM Industries manufactures, supplies, and stocks 304 Stainless Steel Round Bar (UNS S30400). It's the most widely used austenitic stainless steel grade in production, and that status reflects something real. The combination of 18% chromium and 8% nickel, the classic 18-8 composition, provides corrosion resistance that's adequate for the majority of industrial, commercial, and architectural applications at a cost well below specialty grades. For projects where the service environment doesn't push into aggressive chloride or high-temperature territory, 304 covers the requirement dependably and cost-effectively.

Standard 304 and its low-carbon counterpart 304L are frequently dual-certified in current production. Where welding is involved and post-weld sensitization is a concern, 304L is the better specification. For non-welded applications or where dual-certified material is acceptable, standard 304 and 304L are interchangeable in most service conditions.

Corrosion resistance in atmospheric and mild chemical service is well proven over decades of widespread use. 304 handles moisture, humidity, many organic acids, food-grade chemicals, and general industrial environments reliably without significant surface attack. For chloride-rich environments including seawater, coastal salt-spray, and process streams with elevated chloride content, 316L or higher-alloy grades provide better pitting resistance. Within its intended service range, 304 performs consistently and provides long service life with low maintenance requirements.

Weldability is good with standard TIG, MIG, and resistance welding processes. When fabricated assemblies will be exposed to corrosive service, 304L is the preferred specification to avoid sensitization in the heat-affected zone. For structural fabrications not in corrosive service, standard 304 welds without concern.

Machinability is adequate for most production operations. Work hardening during cutting is the primary machining challenge, managed with sharp tooling, appropriate feeds, and cutting fluid. For high-volume precision turned components where machinability is the primary selection driver, free-machining grades like 303 are often the better choice. For most general machining applications, 304 is fully practical.

Non-magnetic behavior in the annealed condition supports applications in medical devices, scientific instruments, and electronic assemblies where magnetic interference is a concern. Cold working or welding will induce some magnetic response, so the degree of processing in the finished component matters for applications where low magnetic permeability is a hard specification requirement.
