PM Industries manufactures, supplies, and stocks 321 Stainless Steel Round Bar (UNS S32100). It's a titanium-stabilized austenitic stainless steel, with titanium added at a minimum of five times the carbon content. That titanium preferentially combines with carbon, preventing chromium carbide precipitation at grain boundaries during exposure to temperatures in the sensitization range of approximately 425°C to 815°C. The result is reliable resistance to intergranular corrosion in the heat-affected zone of welds and in components that operate continuously within that temperature range.

321 serves the same sensitization problem that 304L and 316L address through low carbon content, but through a different mechanism. Where 304L and 316L reduce available carbon, 321 ties up that carbon with titanium. For applications that operate continuously within the sensitization temperature range over long service periods, the stabilization approach of 321 provides ongoing protection that low-carbon chemistry alone can't guarantee indefinitely. That's the specific service condition where 321 is the appropriate specification.

Intergranular corrosion resistance in elevated temperature service is 321's defining advantage. In exhaust systems, boiler components, heat exchanger tubing, and process equipment that operates continuously between 425°C and 815°C, carbide precipitation is an ongoing process that gradually depletes chromium at grain boundaries. Low-carbon grades slow that process but don't stop it. 321's titanium stabilization keeps the carbon tied up and unavailable for carbide formation throughout service, maintaining grain boundary integrity over long operating periods.

Thermal cycling resistance is good. The austenitic structure doesn't undergo phase transformations during heating and cooling, and the titanium stabilization prevents the microstructural changes that would otherwise accumulate through repeated thermal cycling. For exhaust manifolds, expansion joints, and process piping that cycle temperature repeatedly during operation, 321 maintains consistent properties over time.

Elevated temperature strength is adequate for many heat-related structural applications. 321 holds its mechanical properties better than 304 through the sensitization temperature range, which combined with its intergranular corrosion resistance makes it more reliable for long-duration heat service in fabricated structures.

Oxidation resistance up to approximately 870°C in continuous service covers most exhaust, boiler, and process heating applications. Above that temperature, higher-chromium grades like 310 or alloys with aluminum additions provide better oxidation protection.
