PM Industries manufactures, supplies, and stocks 317L Stainless Steel Round Bar (UNS S31703). It's a low-carbon austenitic stainless steel with higher molybdenum content than 316L, typically 3.0–4.0% compared to 2.0–3.0% in 316L. That additional molybdenum is what engineers specify 317L for. In chloride-containing process streams, acidic environments, and service conditions where 316L shows pitting or crevice corrosion at unacceptable rates, the higher PREN of 317L provides a meaningful performance step up without moving to duplex or super austenitic grades.

The low carbon content, 0.03% maximum, addresses the same sensitization concern as 316L. During welding, low carbon reduces carbide precipitation in the heat-affected zone, which maintains corrosion resistance through the weld area without requiring post-weld annealing. For fabricated vessels, heat exchangers, and piping in corrosive chemical service, that behavior is expected and relied upon.

Higher molybdenum pitting resistance is the primary reason 317L gets specified over 316L. In pulp and paper bleaching circuits, sulfuric acid service equipment, flue gas desulfurization systems, and chemical plant environments where chloride concentration or acid content exceeds what 316L handles reliably, 317L extends service life meaningfully. The step from 316L to 317L is often the most cost-effective upgrade path when 316L shows early pitting or corrosion fatigue failure, before moving to duplex or higher-alloy grades.

Sulfuric acid resistance is good across a range of dilute to moderate concentrations, particularly in the absence of strong oxidizing contaminants. Pulp and paper digesters, acid handling equipment, and chemical plant piping in sulfuric acid service frequently specify 317L for that resistance combined with its good fabricability.

Pulp and paper is one of the most consistent application areas for 317L. The combination of chlorine compounds, sulfur-containing chemicals, and organic acids in pulp processing creates an environment that pushes 316L to its limits. 317L's higher molybdenum content handles those conditions more reliably, which is why it's been the standard specification in many pulp mill applications for decades.

Weld fabrication is practical. With proper filler metal selection and standard austenitic welding procedures, 317L fabricates into complex equipment without significant risk of sensitization or heat-affected zone corrosion. Post-weld heat treatment is not required in most service conditions.
