PM Industries manufactures, supplies, and stocks 316L Stainless Steel Round Bar (UNS S31603). It's the low-carbon version of 316 austenitic stainless steel, with carbon held to 0.03% maximum. The molybdenum content, typically 2–3%, provides better pitting and crevice corrosion resistance than 304 and 304L in chloride-containing environments. The low carbon content addresses sensitization in the heat-affected zone during welding, making 316L the standard specification for fabricated vessels, piping systems, and structural assemblies that will be welded and then exposed to corrosive service.

In current production, most 316L material also meets the mechanical property requirements of standard 316 and is dual-certified to both grades. That dual certification is common and practical, covering the full range of 316-series applications with a single heat of material. For new designs involving welded construction in corrosive service, 316L is the default specification.

Weld zone corrosion resistance is where 316L delivers its clearest advantage over standard 316. When standard 316 is welded, the heat-affected zone can sensitize, with carbon combining with chromium to form carbides at grain boundaries. Those carbides reduce local chromium availability and create zones of reduced corrosion resistance adjacent to the weld. With 316L's low carbon content, that precipitation is minimized, maintaining corrosion resistance consistently through the weld zone. For chemical process equipment, pharmaceutical vessels, food processing tanks, and marine fabrications where weld quality directly affects service life, that consistency is a basic requirement.

Molybdenum pitting resistance distinguishes 316L from 304L across a wide range of moderate chloride service conditions. In coastal atmospheres, food processing environments with salt-containing products or acidic cleaning agents, marine hardware, and chemical plant piping with moderate chloride content, 316L provides longer pitting-free service life than 304L. The margin is meaningful in applications where service life and maintenance intervals matter.

Hygienic surface characteristics support food processing, pharmaceutical, and medical equipment applications. The combination of corrosion resistance, cleanability, and non-magnetic behavior in the annealed condition satisfies the material requirements of many regulatory frameworks and industry standards in those sectors.
