PM Industries manufactures, supplies, and stocks Hastelloy C22 Round Bar (UNS N06022). It's a nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy with a tungsten addition, developed as a direct improvement over Hastelloy C276. Compared to C276, C22 has higher chromium content (20–22.5% vs 14.5–16.5%) and slightly lower molybdenum. That shift gives C22 better oxidizing acid resistance while maintaining strong reducing condition performance, making it more balanced across the full corrosion spectrum than C276 in most chemical service environments.

For engineers choosing between C276 and C22, the decision typically comes down to the specific acid chemistry in service. C276 holds a slight edge in strongly reducing conditions. C22 performs better in mixed oxidizing and reducing environments and in applications involving wet chlorine, chlorine dioxide, and hypochlorite solutions where chromium content is the critical variable.

Oxidizing acid resistance is where C22 consistently outperforms C276. In nitric acid, ferric chloride solutions, and mixed acid environments with strong oxidizing character, the higher chromium content in C22 provides meaningfully better protection. Pulp and paper bleaching circuits, where chlorine dioxide and hypochlorite are present alongside organic acids, are a classic example of service conditions where C22 is the preferred specification over C276.

Pitting and crevice corrosion resistance is excellent. The combination of chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten produces a high pitting resistance equivalent that holds up in hot chloride-containing brines, seawater, and process streams that would attack lower-alloy grades quickly. Crevice corrosion, which is often the first failure mode in heat exchanger tube-to-tubesheet joints and flanged piping, is well controlled in C22.

Weld zone corrosion resistance is good in the as-welded condition. Low carbon content prevents carbide precipitation during welding, which maintains corrosion resistance through the heat-affected zone without requiring post-weld heat treatment. That simplifies fabrication of vessels, exchangers, and piping systems considerably.
