PM Industries manufactures, supplies, and stocks Hastelloy B4 Round Bar (UNS N10629). It's a nickel-molybdenum alloy developed as an improved version of the B-family, specifically addressing the thermal stability and heat-affected zone sensitization issues that limited earlier B2 in fabricated equipment. The very high molybdenum content, around 26–30%, is what gives this alloy family its exceptional resistance to reducing acids. B4 builds on that foundation with tighter compositional controls that improve long-term microstructural stability and reduce the risk of knife-line and heat-affected zone attack after welding.

For applications involving hydrochloric acid at any concentration or temperature, the B-family alloys have no close rivals among commercially available wrought alloys. B4 is the current preferred version of that family for fabricated equipment where thermal exposure during welding or heat treatment is unavoidable.

Hydrochloric acid resistance is the defining capability of Hastelloy B4. Across dilute concentrations up through concentrated HCl at elevated temperatures, B4 maintains low corrosion rates in conditions that rapidly attack C-family alloys, stainless steels, and titanium. That capability covers the most aggressive reducing acid service encountered in chemical manufacturing and acid handling systems.

Thermal stability is meaningfully better than B2. In B2, exposure to temperatures in the range of 540°C to 900°C, whether during welding or post-weld heat treatment, could cause precipitation of nickel-molybdenum intermetallic phases that reduced both corrosion resistance and ductility. B4's controlled iron and cobalt additions suppress that precipitation, making it more reliable in fabricated structures that experience those temperatures during manufacturing.

Weld zone performance is improved. The combination of low carbon content and controlled composition reduces knife-line attack and heat-affected zone corrosion, which in older B-family alloys was a source of premature failure in welded equipment. For heat exchangers, reactors, and piping systems where weld quality directly affects service life, that improvement is significant.

B4 is not suited for oxidizing environments. Chlorine, ferric ions, cupric ions, and other oxidizing contaminants in otherwise reducing acid streams can cause rapid attack. Process chemistry should be evaluated carefully before specifying B4 where any oxidizing species may be present.
