PM Industries manufactures, supplies, and stocks Hastelloy B3 Round Bar (UNS N10675). It's the latest generation of the Hastelloy B family, developed to address the remaining limitations of B2 and B4. The primary corrosion resistance mechanism is the same across the B family: very high molybdenum content, around 28.5%, provides outstanding protection in reducing acid environments. What B3 adds over earlier versions is significantly better thermal stability, a wider safe fabrication window, and better resistance to both knife-line attack and heat-affected zone corrosion after welding.

In practical terms, B3 is the most fabrication-friendly member of the B family. It tolerates a broader range of welding and post-weld thermal conditions without developing the microstructural problems that made B2 difficult to use in complex fabricated equipment. For chemical plants building welded vessels, heat exchangers, and piping systems from B-family alloys, B3 is now the standard specification in most cases.

Thermal stability is the headline improvement in B3. The B2 alloy was prone to precipitation of nickel-molybdenum intermetallic phases when exposed to temperatures between roughly 540°C and 900°C, which both reduced corrosion resistance and embrittled the material. B3's refined compositional balance, with controlled additions of iron, chromium, and cobalt, suppresses that precipitation across a much wider temperature range. That allows welding and heat treatment to be performed with considerably more confidence in the final properties of the fabricated component.

Hydrochloric acid resistance is the core capability, and B3 delivers it as well as any member of the family. Across all concentrations, including concentrated HCl at or near boiling, corrosion rates are low where other commercially available alloys would corrode rapidly. That includes C-family nickel alloys, titanium, and all grades of stainless steel, none of which provide comparable performance in concentrated reducing HCl service.

Resistance to sulfuric acid is good across a moderate concentration range. B3 is not optimized for high-concentration sulfuric acid in the same way some other alloys are, but for dilute to moderate concentrations under reducing conditions, it performs reliably.

B3 is not suitable for oxidizing environments. The presence of ferric ions, cupric ions, dissolved oxygen, or oxidizing acids in an otherwise reducing stream can cause rapid corrosion. Process chemistry should be confirmed before specifying B3 where any oxidizing contamination may occur.
