Haynes 242 is a nickel-molybdenum-chromium alloy developed for a specific combination of properties that distinguishes it from other Haynes nickel alloys: good elevated temperature strength, low thermal expansion, and resistance to fluoride-bearing corrosive environments. That combination was designed specifically to address the requirements of gas turbine seal and ring applications where dimensional stability through thermal cycling and resistance to attack from seal-area chemistry are both design requirements.

The low thermal expansion characteristic is unusual for a nickel alloy. Most nickel alloys have thermal expansion coefficients comparable to austenitic stainless steels. Haynes 242's molybdenum-chromium composition produces an expansion coefficient significantly lower than standard nickel alloys, which reduces differential expansion stresses in assemblies where the alloy is joined to lower-expansion materials or where tight dimensional control through thermal cycling is a design requirement.

Low thermal expansion combined with strength at temperature is the combination that drives Haynes 242 specification in gas turbine seal ring and containment ring applications. Seal rings in gas turbines must maintain tight dimensional tolerances through the full temperature range of engine operation, from cold soak on the ground to full operating temperature in service. An alloy with high thermal expansion changes dimensions significantly through that range and may not maintain the sealing clearances required at all points in the thermal cycle. Haynes 242's lower expansion coefficient reduces that dimensional change, supporting tighter clearance control and better seal efficiency across the operating cycle.

Fluoride resistance is relevant for specific gas turbine applications where seal chemistry or repair processes involve fluoride-bearing compounds. Some turbine sealing systems use abradable seal materials that contain fluoride compounds, and the seal ring material must resist attack from those compounds at operating temperatures. Haynes 242 provides that resistance better than most standard nickel superalloys, which is part of its specific fitness for those applications.

Age-hardening through long-range ordering during elevated temperature service is a characteristic that provides additional strengthening as the alloy accumulates service time at temperature. Unlike conventional precipitation-hardening that requires a separate aging heat treatment, this mechanism operates during service exposure, which means the alloy strengthens progressively during the early portion of its service life at operating temperature.
