PM Industries manufactures, supplies, and stocks AMS 5708 Waspaloy Sheet Plate (UNS N07001). AMS 5708 covers Waspaloy in sheet and strip form to the full aerospace material specification, including chemistry, mechanical property requirements, heat treatment condition, and surface quality. The alloy itself is a nickel-cobalt-chromium-molybdenum superalloy strengthened by gamma-prime precipitates from titanium and aluminum additions, developed specifically for high-stress rotating and structural applications in gas turbine engines operating at elevated temperatures.

Waspaloy is a step above Alloy C-263 and many other fabricable nickel superalloys in elevated temperature strength and creep resistance. It achieves higher tensile and yield strength in the aged condition and better creep performance at temperatures above approximately 750°C, which is why it's used for the most structurally demanding hot-section components in aerospace gas turbines. The trade-off is that Waspaloy is harder to fabricate and weld than C-263, and the risk of strain-age cracking during post-weld heat treatment is higher. Applications that specify Waspaloy have done so because the performance requirement justifies that additional manufacturing challenge.

Creep strength at temperature is the performance parameter that puts Waspaloy into the most demanding gas turbine applications. Turbine disc rim components, high-pressure compressor discs, and structural hot-section parts that carry significant sustained load at temperature need an alloy that deforms minimally over thousands of hours of service. The high gamma-prime volume fraction in Waspaloy is what produces that creep resistance. It's substantially better than solid-solution strengthened alloys like Hastelloy X and C-263's gamma-prime strengthening, which is why Waspaloy appears in the most structurally critical hot-section locations.

Oxidation resistance covers the service environment for combustor and turbine hardware. Chromium and cobalt additions provide a stable protective oxide in air and combustion gas atmospheres. The oxidation resistance is adequate for the service conditions of turbine disc rims, combustor structural components, and high-pressure turbine hardware, though it doesn't match the extreme oxidation resistance of alumina-forming alloys for the hottest combustor face applications.

Welding procedure control is the fabrication requirement that Waspaloy imposes most emphatically. The high gamma-prime volume fraction that gives Waspaloy its strength is also responsible for its susceptibility to strain-age cracking during post-weld heat treatment, where carbide and gamma-prime precipitation during heating of the weld zone can generate sufficient stress to cause cracking before the material fully homogenizes. Controlled preheat, low heat input, and carefully managed post-weld heat treatment cycles are required to produce sound Waspaloy welds consistently. That requirement is well understood in aerospace manufacturing, and standard welding procedures exist for it, but it adds process complexity compared to more weldable superalloys.
