HS230 is the sheet product designation for Haynes 230, a solid-solution strengthened nickel-chromium-tungsten-molybdenum alloy developed for long-term service at very high temperatures. In sheet and plate form, the alloy is used to fabricate combustor liners, transition ducts, furnace liner panels, and other flat-product fabrications that require both high-temperature oxidation resistance and sufficient fabricability to be formed, cut, and welded into complex structures.

The lanthanum addition in Haynes 230, small in quantity but significant in effect, is what keeps the chromia oxide scale adherent during thermal cycling. That scale adhesion is the practical difference between an alloy that survives many thermal cycles without progressive surface loss and one that spalls repeatedly. For fabricated sheet metal components in cyclic furnace and turbine service, scale spalling accelerates surface consumption and shortens component life. Haynes 230 sheet manages that cycling better than most competing nickel alloys without lanthanum.

Fabricability in sheet form is one of the practical advantages that keeps Haynes 230 in continuous production for fabricated sheet metal applications. Some high-temperature nickel alloys with comparable oxidation resistance are difficult to form in sheet stock without cracking, or require specialized tooling and procedures that add cost and complexity. Haynes 230 sheet in the annealed condition forms with the same approach used for other nickel alloys, using standard press brake and roll forming equipment with tooling appropriate for the thickness. That practical formability makes it accessible for a wide range of fabrication shops, not just those with specialized superalloy processing capability.

Weldability is good for the alloy's temperature capability class. Complex fabricated structures with multiple welds in multiple orientations can be produced from Haynes 230 sheet without the strain-age cracking risk that limits higher-gamma-prime alloys like Rene 41 or Waspaloy. The solid-solution strengthening mechanism doesn't produce the rapid precipitation response during heating that causes cracking in those alloys. Post-weld heat treatment is typically not required, simplifying fabricated assembly work further.

Carburization resistance in carbon-rich furnace atmospheres is particularly relevant for industrial furnace liner panels, retort sheet metal, and muffle components where the process atmosphere contains carbon activity that would embrittle lower-alloy materials. Haynes 230's chromium content and stable microstructure resist carbon absorption effectively in moderate to high carbon activity environments, extending sheet metal component life in those applications.
