PM Industries manufactures, supplies, and stocks AMS 5712 Rene 41 Sheet Plate (UNS N07041). AMS 5712 is the aerospace material specification covering Rene 41 in sheet and strip form, establishing chemistry, mechanical property requirements, heat treatment condition, and surface quality for aerospace production. Rene 41 is a nickel-cobalt-chromium-molybdenum precipitation-hardening superalloy, strengthened by a high volume fraction of gamma-prime precipitates from aluminum and titanium additions. That high gamma-prime content is what gives Rene 41 its exceptional elevated temperature strength, and it's also what makes the alloy one of the more challenging superalloys to fabricate and weld.

Rene 41 is positioned at the high end of the strength spectrum among precipitation-hardening nickel superalloys in sheet form. It achieves higher tensile and yield strength at elevated temperatures than C-263 and approaches the strength of Waspaloy, but with more demanding fabrication requirements than either. It was developed for applications in jet engine hot sections where the mechanical load is high enough that neither solid-solution strengthened alloys nor lower-gamma-prime alloys can provide adequate structural performance.
Elevated temperature strength at the upper end of the turbine hot section temperature range is the primary reason Rene 41 gets specified where other sheet superalloys reach their limits. In components that carry significant structural load at temperatures approaching 980°C, the strength advantage of Rene 41 over C-263 and even Waspaloy becomes the determining selection factor. For those applications, the more demanding fabrication requirements are accepted as the cost of the performance the alloy delivers.
Strain-age cracking susceptibility is the fabrication challenge that defines how Rene 41 must be processed. The high volume fraction of gamma-prime precipitates means the alloy strengthens rapidly and at relatively low temperatures during heating from the solution-annealed condition. In welded joints, if the post-weld heat treatment heats the heat-affected zone through the precipitation range before the material fully stress-relieves, the precipitation stress combined with residual welding stress can exceed the material's ductility at that temperature and cause cracking. Managing that requires carefully controlled heating rates, preheat to minimize residual stress, and controlled heat treatment cycles. The procedures are established and well-understood in aerospace manufacturing, but they require proper qualification and discipline in execution.
Formability in the solution-annealed condition is adequate for the sheet forming operations needed to produce combustor and hot-section sheet metal components, though it's more limited than C-263's formability. Complex double-curvature forms and tight bend radii require more care than with more ductile superalloy sheets. Heat treatment after forming restores ductility somewhat and develops the final precipitation-hardened strength.
Sheet and plate are available in the solution-annealed condition with full material certification to AMS 5712 and applicable specifications. Contact PM Industries for thickness, width, length, quantity, and pricing.
