PM Industries manufactures, supplies, and stocks Inconel 617 Round Bar (UNS N06617). It's a nickel-chromium-cobalt-molybdenum alloy developed for continuous service at temperatures that push the limits of most other engineering alloys. Solid-solution strengthening from cobalt and molybdenum gives 617 excellent strength retention at temperatures above 980°C, where many nickel alloys begin losing load-bearing capability faster than their oxidation resistance would suggest. That combination of high-temperature strength and oxidation resistance in one alloy is what keeps 617 consistently specified for the hottest sections of gas turbines, industrial furnaces, and advanced power generation systems.

Inconel 617 is also one of the candidate materials for next-generation nuclear power systems, specifically very high-temperature reactor designs where structural components see both extreme heat and neutron exposure. Its long-term stability under sustained thermal load makes it credible for those applications in a way that many other superalloys are not.
Creep strength at extreme temperatures is the primary reason 617 gets specified over alloys like Haynes 230 or Inconel 625 in the hottest service conditions. Above approximately 980°C under sustained load, 617 maintains lower creep rates than most competing solid-solution strengthened alloys. For components like transition ducts, combustor hardware, and structural supports in advanced gas turbines operating at high firing temperatures, that creep advantage translates directly into longer component life between inspections and replacements.
Oxidation resistance is excellent across the full operating range. The high chromium content combined with aluminum additions produces a protective oxide scale that limits surface attack effectively in air, combustion gases, and hot process atmospheres. Thermal cycling resistance is good, with the scale remaining adherent through heating and cooling without significant spalling.
Carburization resistance is adequate for most industrial furnaces and petrochemical environments. In reformer and cracking furnace service, 617 is used for components that see the highest temperatures in the system, where the combination of heat and carbon activity would be too severe for 800HT or Haynes HR-120.
Fabricability is practical for a superalloy in its performance class. 617 can be welded, machined, and formed using procedures appropriate for high-temperature nickel alloys. It's considerably more workable than the highly gamma-prime strengthened alloys used in rotating turbine hardware, which makes it suitable for fabricated structures and welded assemblies.
