The chemistry pairs about 6% aluminum, which stabilizes the alpha phase, with about 4% vanadium, which stabilizes the beta phase. Grade 5 sheet and plate offer high tensile strength, strong fatigue resistance, and a relatively low modulus of elasticity. The lower modulus gives it some flex and good energy absorption, which helps it hold up against deformation and cyclic loading. Typical values run near 895 to 1000 MPa tensile strength, around 828 MPa yield, and roughly 14% elongation, though the figures depend on product form and condition. The alloy forms a stable oxide film as soon as it meets oxygen, and that passive layer gives it strong resistance to general corrosion, pitting, and stress-corrosion cracking in aggressive chemicals, marine water, and industrial acids. It also keeps its strength and shape across a wide temperature range, working well from cryogenic lows up to continuous service near 400 degrees C (752 degrees F).

Machining and cold forming take care, since the alloy's high strength and low thermal conductivity call for rigid setups and the right tooling. It responds well to hot working, diffusion bonding, and conventional fusion welding, which makes it practical to build into intricate, lightweight structural assemblies.

Grade 5 cuts weight while carrying high load, so it is used across demanding engineering work. In aerospace and defense it goes into structural components such as aircraft fuselages, wing panels, jet engine compressor blades, and rocket engine casings. Its saltwater corrosion resistance suits marine infrastructure, offshore oil and gas equipment, and submarine hulls. Its biocompatibility and bone-integration behavior also make it a standard in medical work, including surgical implants, orthopedic plates, and prosthetic devices.
