AMS 4981 covers Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-6Mo, also listed as UNS R56260. It is an alpha-beta titanium alloy built for high-strength, elevated-temperature work. Compared with the common Ti-6Al-4V grade, 6-2-4-6 holds strength better in thicker sections thanks to its deep hardenability. That makes it a strong pick where heavier cross-sections still need to perform.

The alloy responds to solution treatment and aging, which builds high tensile strength even in larger cross-sections where standard alpha-beta grades fall off. In annealed or solution-treated and aged conditions, it delivers ultimate tensile strength of 160-180 ksi (1103-1241 MPa) and yield strength of 150-167 ksi (1034-1152 MPa), with elongation around 6-13% and good reduction in area.

It works reliably at temperatures up to roughly 450-550°C (840-1020°F), with strong creep resistance, fatigue strength, and fracture toughness. Corrosion resistance is good, including sour service per NACE MR0175, so it holds up in aggressive chemical and offshore conditions.

Deep hardenability lets fabricators tune the microstructure through alpha-beta or beta forging followed by heat treatment, balancing strength, ductility, and low-cycle fatigue performance. Machining, forming, and forging all work with the right techniques. Welding is more limited and calls for careful procedures and contamination control to get sound results.
