The near-alpha microstructure gives BT20 its characteristic combination of high strength at elevated temperatures and good creep resistance, which positions it in the same high-temperature titanium performance category as alloys like Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo in Western aerospace practice.

BT20 is specified where the temperature capability of Ti-6Al-4V is insufficient. Ti-6Al-4V is the most widely used titanium alloy globally, but its practical elevated temperature limit for sustained load-bearing is around 300°C. BT20 extends usable strength to higher temperatures, making it appropriate for compressor components, hot structural sections, and aerospace hardware that operates beyond Ti-6Al-4V's practical range.

High-temperature strength is the primary selection driver for BT20 over standard Ti-6Al-4V. In aerospace compressor stages, hot structural panels, and engine-adjacent components that operate at temperatures where Ti-6Al-4V begins losing strength at an unacceptable rate, near-alpha alloys like BT20 provide the additional temperature margin required. The weight saving relative to nickel superalloys or steel in those locations is also significant, which is why near-alpha titanium alloys occupy a specific and important place in gas turbine and aerospace structural design.

Corrosion resistance is inherent to titanium alloys generally. BT20 resists seawater, salt-spray, and many industrial chemical environments without surface treatment, which is a practical advantage in marine and offshore applications where stainless steels and aluminium alloys may need additional protection. That resistance combined with high specific strength makes titanium alloys attractive for naval aircraft components, marine hardware, and offshore structural elements where weight, corrosion, and strength all matter simultaneously.

Fabrication requires procedures appropriate for titanium alloys. Welding must be performed in an inert gas shield or vacuum to prevent oxygen and nitrogen contamination of the weld zone, which causes embrittlement. Machining requires sharp tooling, lower cutting speeds than steel, and effective coolant to manage the low thermal conductivity of titanium. With proper technique, complex precision components and fabricated assemblies are achievable.
