PM Industries manufactures, supplies, and stocks Super Duplex 32750 Round Bar (UNS S32750). It's a super duplex stainless steel with approximately 25% chromium, 4% molybdenum, 7% nickel, and a nitrogen addition, producing a PREN typically above 42. That places it well above standard duplex grades like S32205, which typically run PREN around 34–36, and significantly above 316L at around 25. The higher pitting resistance is the primary reason super duplex is specified over standard duplex in the most aggressive chloride environments.

The duplex microstructure, roughly equal parts austenite and ferrite, gives S32750 yield strength approximately four times that of 316L austenitic stainless steel. That combination of very high PREN and very high yield strength covers the two most common material selection drivers in offshore, desalination, and chemical plant service where standard duplex reaches its limits.

Pitting resistance at PREN above 42 means S32750 handles seawater and chloride-contaminated process streams at temperatures where standard duplex 2205 and certainly 316L would show localized attack. In desalination plant equipment, seawater heat exchangers, and offshore process streams where chloride concentration and operating temperature combine unfavorably for lower-PREN alloys, S32750 provides reliable service where those grades have demonstrated premature failure.

Stress corrosion cracking resistance is excellent across the full service temperature range. The duplex microstructure is inherently more resistant to SCC than austenitic grades in chloride environments, and the super duplex composition extends that resistance to more aggressive conditions than standard duplex 2205 can handle. For heat exchangers and process vessels operating with hot concentrated chloride streams, that extended resistance translates directly into longer equipment service life.

High yield strength reduces material consumption in pressure-containing equipment. Compared to 316L, S32750 allows designers to specify reduced wall thickness for the same pressure rating and service life expectation. In large offshore process vessels, heat exchanger bundles, and subsea piping systems, that weight reduction has practical installation and structural engineering consequences.

Weldability requires careful attention to procedure. Controlling heat input, maintaining appropriate interpass temperatures, and using matched or slightly overalloyed super duplex filler metal are all necessary to maintain the correct phase balance in the weld and heat-affected zone. Correctly welded S32750 maintains its corrosion resistance and mechanical properties through the weld zone reliably with proper procedure qualification.
