PM Industries manufactures, supplies, and stocks Duplex S32205 Round Bar (UNS S32205). It's the current standard designation for 2205 duplex stainless steel, with tighter compositional controls than the earlier S31803 designation, particularly on chromium minimum (22% vs 21%), molybdenum minimum (3% vs 2.5%), and nitrogen minimum (0.14% vs 0.08%). Those tighter controls ensure a more consistent pitting resistance equivalent number and more predictable corrosion performance in service, which is why S32205 is the preferred specification for new designs while S31803 remains acceptable where dual certification covers both.

The duplex microstructure, roughly 50% austenite and 50% ferrite after solution annealing, is what gives this alloy its characteristic performance profile. Yield strength is approximately double that of 316L. Chloride stress corrosion cracking resistance is significantly better than austenitic grades. Pitting resistance surpasses 316L and 317L in most chloride-containing environments. Those three properties together cover the failure modes that most commonly limit austenitic stainless steel service life in chemical, marine, and offshore applications.

Pitting resistance is consistently better than 316L and 317L in chloride-containing process streams, seawater, and brine environments. The PREN value driven by chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content means that at temperatures where 316L begins to pit, S32205 continues to perform without localized attack. That temperature margin is the practical difference between acceptable and unacceptable service life in many process plant applications.

Stress corrosion cracking resistance is the property that most frequently drives the switch from 316L to duplex stainless in chemical and offshore applications. Austenitic grades are susceptible to chloride SCC when service conditions put temperature, tensile stress, and chloride concentration above threshold levels simultaneously. Those conditions are common in evaporators, heat exchangers, and offshore structural components. S32205 resists SCC in those conditions with a wide enough margin to provide reliable service where 316L has failed repeatedly.

High yield strength has direct material and fabrication cost implications. Pressure vessels, piping systems, and structural components designed to S32205 can use reduced wall thickness compared to 316L designs at the same pressure rating. That reduction carries through to lower material weight, reduced welding volume, and lower installation costs in large fabricated assemblies.
