PM Industries manufactures, supplies, and stocks Duplex 31803 Round Bar (UNS S31803). It's a duplex stainless steel with a mixed austenitic-ferritic microstructure, containing approximately 22% chromium, 5–6% nickel, and 3% molybdenum with a nitrogen addition. That dual-phase structure is what gives duplex stainless steels their characteristic combination of higher strength than austenitic grades and better toughness than ferritic grades. In practical terms, yield strength is roughly twice that of standard 316L, which allows engineers to reduce wall thickness and component weight in pressure-containing and structural applications without sacrificing mechanical integrity.

S31803 and S32205 are closely related. S31803 is the older UNS designation with a slightly broader composition range. S32205 is the revised designation with tighter controls on chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen that ensure consistent pitting resistance equivalent number values. In current practice, most material certified to S31803 also meets S32205, and dual certification is common. When specifying, S32205 is the preferred designation for new designs where pitting resistance consistency matters.

Chloride stress corrosion cracking resistance is one of the most practically significant advantages duplex stainless steels have over austenitic grades. Austenitic grades like 304 and 316 are susceptible to chloride SCC when temperature, tensile stress, and chloride concentration combine above threshold levels. That combination occurs regularly in chemical plant, offshore, and marine service environments. Duplex 31803 resists SCC in those conditions considerably better, which directly reduces the risk of unexpected failures in critical process equipment.

Pitting resistance is quantifiably better than 316L and 317L across most chloride-containing environments. The PREN value of 34 or above, driven by chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content, provides reliable protection in seawater, process brines, and chloride-contaminated process streams where 316L would show pitting at elevated temperatures.

High yield strength has direct economic consequences in pressure vessel and piping design. Using less material to achieve the same pressure rating reduces both material cost and fabrication weight. In offshore structures and large process vessels where weight carries significant installation and structural cost implications, that reduction is meaningful.
