PM Industries manufactures, supplies, and stocks Nickel 201 Round Bar (UNS N02201). It's a commercially pure nickel grade at 99.6% minimum nickel content, identical in composition to Nickel 200 except for one critical difference: carbon is held to 0.02% maximum in 201, compared to 0.15% maximum in 200. That lower carbon content is the entire reason 201 exists as a separate specification. It eliminates the graphitization risk that limits Nickel 200 above approximately 315°C, making 201 the correct choice whenever service temperature exceeds that threshold.

For applications below 315°C, 200 and 201 are essentially interchangeable in corrosion performance. Above that temperature, particularly in reducing or sulfur-containing atmospheres where graphitization is a practical concern, 201 is the standard specification. Engineers should default to 201 when there's any uncertainty about service temperature or when the application involves elevated temperature service of any kind.
Caustic resistance is the primary corrosion service driver for both 200 and 201. In sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide service, hot concentrated caustic conditions that attack stainless steels and most other engineering alloys, Nickel 201 maintains low corrosion rates reliably. Chlor-alkali plant equipment, caustic evaporators, pipelines, and storage vessels are classic applications where no practical lower-cost alternative provides equivalent performance.
The low carbon content also improves weld quality. In welded fabrications that will see elevated temperature service, the reduced carbon in 201 minimizes heat-affected zone carbide precipitation and associated embrittlement. For caustic service equipment that will be fabricated by welding, 201 is the more reliable specification even at temperatures where 200 might technically be within range.
Electrical and thermal conductivity remain useful in electronic and electrochemical applications. The combination of high purity, good conductivity, and strong corrosion resistance makes 201 practical for electrical contacts, electrode components, and process equipment in electrochemical manufacturing where both conductivity and chemical resistance matter simultaneously.
Surface purity is relevant in food processing, pharmaceutical handling, and specialty chemical applications where trace metal contamination from equipment materials is unacceptable. Commercially pure nickel provides a clean, non-contaminating contact surface that satisfies those requirements without requiring special coatings or linings.
