PM Industries manufactures, supplies, and stocks Monel 400 Round Bar (UNS N04400). It's a nickel-copper alloy with approximately 63–70% nickel and 28–34% copper, solid-solution strengthened and used in the as-annealed or cold-worked condition. No heat treatment is required to develop its mechanical properties, which keeps fabrication straightforward. The nickel-copper combination gives it a corrosion resistance profile that's genuinely different from nickel alloys or copper alloys individually, performing well across a broader range of environments than either base metal alone.

400 has been a standard specification in marine, chemical, and oil and gas applications for over a century. Its track record in seawater service and hydrofluoric acid environments is extensively documented, which gives engineers confidence in specifying it for new applications where field history is as important as laboratory corrosion data.

Seawater corrosion resistance is one of the strongest applications for Monel 400. In flowing seawater, the alloy maintains very low corrosion rates and resists pitting and crevice attack well. At low or stagnant flow rates, some susceptibility to pitting can develop, and higher-alloy options like 625 or titanium may be more appropriate for those specific conditions. In flowing seawater service, pumps, propeller shafts, seawater piping, and marine hardware, 400 has a long proven history.

Hydrofluoric acid resistance is exceptional and largely unique among commercially available alloys at reasonable cost. In anhydrous hydrofluoric acid and in HF solutions below the dew point, Monel 400 maintains low corrosion rates where most stainless steels and nickel alloys corrode rapidly. Alkylation units in petroleum refining, HF acid handling systems, and fluorochemical production equipment regularly specify 400 specifically for this resistance.

Sulfuric acid resistance is good in reducing conditions, particularly in dilute to moderately concentrated acid without strong oxidizing contaminants. The alloy is not recommended for concentrated sulfuric acid or for sulfuric acid containing dissolved oxygen or ferric ions, which shift conditions toward oxidizing and cause accelerated attack.
