PM Industries manufactures, supplies, and stocks Monel K500 Round Bar (UNS N05500). It's a nickel-copper alloy with aluminum and titanium additions that allow it to be age hardened, producing mechanical properties significantly above what Monel 400 can achieve in the annealed condition. The corrosion resistance baseline is the same as 400, which means excellent seawater resistance, strong hydrofluoric acid resistance, and broad performance in reducing and mildly oxidizing environments. What K500 adds is substantially higher tensile strength, higher hardness, and better wear resistance, without giving up the corrosion performance that makes the Monel family useful.

The relationship between MonelK500 and Monel 400 is similar to the relationship between 925 and 825, or 725 and 625. When the application requires the corrosion resistance of the base Monel composition at a higher strength level than the annealed grade can provide, K500 is the specification. For marine shafts, downhole tools, fasteners, and springs where both seawater resistance and mechanical load-bearing capability matter, K500 is consistently the preferred material.

Seawater performance is proven across decades of marine service. K500 handles flowing seawater reliably, resisting pitting, crevice corrosion, and biofouling-related attack. Propeller shafts in high-performance marine vessels, pump shafts in seawater handling systems, and subsea connector hardware regularly specify K500 because the combination of seawater resistance and high strength eliminates the need to choose between corrosion performance and mechanical capability.

Strength in the aged condition is substantially higher than 400. Typical tensile strength in the fully aged condition runs around 1000 MPa or above depending on processing history, compared to roughly 550 MPa for annealed 400. That difference matters for springs, fasteners, and structural components where load-bearing capacity under corrosive conditions would otherwise require a higher-alloy grade with less corrosion resistance.

Wear resistance improves with age hardening. The harder surface resulting from aging makes K500 more suitable for parts experiencing sliding contact, abrasion, or repeated mechanical stress, which is relevant for valve components, pump wear rings, and bearing surfaces in corrosive service.

Age hardening should be performed on the finished or near-finished component after all major machining and forming operations. K500 is considerably easier to machine in the solution-annealed condition, and the aged condition is significantly harder and more difficult to machine efficiently.
